Firstly, the coupling of the earlier Free and Bad Company singer with a band that has been soldiering on without its most unforgettable USP is no catastrophe. This is no repeat of the Calling All Stations-epoch parody that Genesis created by using a d-list singer. Paul Rodgers is, in any book, a legend, and passionately meets his part. The problem is that his individuality, faked at the age of 19 is rock stiff. His voice, which always did sound older than his years hasn’t truly changed one bit. And Queen’s Led Zeppelin-at-the-Royal-Opera-House brand of drive time rock is correspondingly set in stone. Hence, this is not an alchemical marriage, but more an energetic sing-along.

Yet pure aptitude and knowledge will out. And stylistic snags have, in the prime, been ignored. Thus, we get no leather-dressed front man singing about fairy folk: Rodgers’ lyrics always dependent on the more snow-white old formula in rock’s lexicon. Meantime May and Taylor go for a tough border more matched to Rodgers’ grayish larynx. The mix is at its most amusing when both sides give the most of their autograph sounds. The eco ballad Small is silly and only comes living when Brian whips out the board. In deed, too often songs begin like the mid-paced Bad Company country rockers (Some Things That Gliitter) and inadequate Freddie Mercury’s rococo added extras that would have prolonged the band beyond just competence. So it is the harder rocking numbers that attract the most.
