As the most widely enjoyed music in the world, reggae has succeeded in its oft-repeated aim to ‘go international’. And since the early mistakes were conquered (low production values, failing to hit the afterbeat) home-grown reggae acts have sprung up across the globe. These artists can be divided into two camps: those like Gentleman, Natural Black and Alborosie who studied in Jamaica to hit big in their adopted homes and ‘a foreign’, and NZ’s Fat Freddie’s Drop, Serbia’s FC Apatride Utd, and Brazilian roots and culture act, Ponto De Equilibrio, who’ve created their own sound, unconstrained by current wisdom.

Formed in a North Rio commune, Ponto De Equilibrio have adopted reggae as the quintessential outsiders’ music. Of course there is a whole lot more to reggae than ”truths and rights”, but second album, Abre a Janela’s colourful tales of a divided Brazil whose favela denizens are swept under the carpet fit neatly over their union of rockers rhythms with samba, macarutu and maculele.

The Osmond are an American pop group family of 7 siblings who has shaken the whole world by their teenage music idols. The original Utah saints have returned with their hit music collection to support renewed interest and a tour. Genuinely, a four piece that includes Alan, Wayne, Merrill and Jay are creating a regular appearance on the show of Andy Williams and also in Sweden with teh huge success. It was because of the deadly combination of teen brother and heartthrob Donny that got the worldwide fame and success.
Their very first hit, One Bad Apple, depicted the boys peeling off the rivals the Jackson 5 but after a year, they came into their own with Down By The Lazy River. If you remember that the boys feel proud on playing everything by themselves, then you would feel surprsed why, after this, they didnt go on to win the known world of AOR. Regettably, it was Elvis rhinestoned jumpsuits and a predominance of schmaltz and morality that stymied them. From this level, the family has provided us classics of proto-boynad type like Let Me Go and Love Me For A Reason. The combination of other various hits of this group started making their own place on the charts. Donny’s Puppy Love is a moderatedly heading at 50s balladry, but the newness of ‘little’ Jimmy Osmond’s Long Haired Lover From Liverpool still grates like fingernails on a blackboard.

Foxboro Hot Tubs is an American rock band and ‘Stop, Drop and Roll’ is the first music record of this band. You would be right in thinking that Stop, Drop and Roll owes something to 60s. as all fans now surely know, Foxboro Hot Tubs, actually, Green Day having a little retro fun on the side with their touring band along for the ride. The boys of Foxboro Hot Tubs (Green Day, in actual) are trying a stamp of approval appearance in the Simpson Movie in 2007. The music material was freely available on the band’s own website but now with a live tour their album will get a proper physical release.

After playing to an estimated worldwide audience of 55 million people opening Live Earth, you would assume that you would recognise the gentlemen and lady behind BlocoElectro. Forming part of the SOS All-Stars, the drumming super group of 40 members, led by Roger Taylor of Queen, the band are slowly making the transition between support slots to the main attraction.
Global Beatbox Part 1 is a curious collection of electronic and hip hop-tinged dance, compromised of solely percussive based sounds. Largely influenced by the sound of Brazilian drumming groups (Bloco) and fusing the distinct rhythmic patterns with both Latin and other world beats, BlocoElectro have a sound that is like a thousand holidays rolled into one.

The emphasis is very much on the ‘Global’ throughout this album, with inspiration gained from just about anywhere you care to mention. Echoes of India, Africa and the Middle East all feature but each influence never sits incongruent to another and each sound seems to meld seamlessly into each other in this international melting pot.
